More Irises!
Tuesday June 1, 2004

Here’re a few more of my irises. If you’re in Canada or the US, a good place to get them is Ferncliff Gardens. I have had good success with irises I order from them. Here’s Coral Carpet.

Here’s Cream Pixie.

Here’s Michael Paul.

Standard Dwarf Bearded Irises
Monday May 31, 2004

I’ve planted a few irises in my yards since I moved here two years ago. Irises are nice to look at, quite easy to plant and take care of, and the deer don’t eat them. There are many variety of irises but most of what I have are standard dwarf bearded (SDB) irises. They’re hardier and take less time to get established than their taller relatives. Calgary is in USDA zone 3 so we need hardy plants.

Here’s a clump of chubby cheeks I planted in 2002.

Here’s a close up.

Here’s one called lesson I planted last autumn.

Here're a white SDB, a blue SDB, and a purple SDB. When you buy plants from gardening stores instead of order them from mail-order specialty nurseries, they don’t come with fancy names :-). Another interesting thing is the white one was labeled “red”! Who knows what happened. Perhaps someone attached the wrong label. Perhaps the wrong plant was put into the pot. Oh well, it looks nice in white though.
