A blog where I will write mostly about programming in Cocoa, Carbon, and CoreMIDI, and experiences from my ports of Emacs and XEmacs to Mac OS X.

Looking Ahead

Thursday July 21, 2005

I took some time off in the last two weeks to see the Calgary Stampede with my cousin’s family who’re visiting from California. Having watched the parade, rodeo, and chuckwagon races on TV for a few years, it was a great treat for me to see these events in person. I think my favorite rodeo event is now steer wrestling (or bulldogging). It’s just really amazing to watch a guy take down a 500-pound bull with his bare hands in a few seconds! Oh, did I mention he’s also just jumped off a horse going 30 m.p.h.?

It was fun to have my guests try some of my cooking, and also delightful to have kids in the house (for a short time :-)). I tip my hat to all parents: where do you get the energy? I enjoyed playing Tekken 5 with my niece and nephew. My favorite avatar is of course Ling Xiao Yu. I know it’s not a common choice. But hey, everyone wants to be Jin and can play him reasonably well, right? Anyway, thank you for the visit, G., E., R., and D.

OK. I’m now consolidating ideas for my next programming project (let’s call it TOE). I started to write a few small MIDI programs last year to prepare for my great scriptable, extendible, MIDI, jazz-theory-reasoning sequencer/editor “system”, right? When I studied and experimented with automatic accompaniment, I decided that it would be a good idea to package it and sell it, kind of as a Band-in-a-Box replacement. To do that I spent a bit of time on software protection, setting up a web site, and setting up a store at Kagi (my experience with them has been great, I’ll write about that soon). Of course that work resulted in MyJazzBand, which is now “on-line”. I’d like to thank those who have purchased license keys. As I will write about in the next few days, work on TOE will be used to improve MyJazzBand. A new, more powerful version of MyJazzBand will eventually be built on TOE. People who have already purchased MyJazzBand need not worry because I will take good care of my paying customers.

I’ll write more about TOE in the next few days. If you follow my development of the Carbon XEmacs port here you may wonder whether I’m going to work on it some more, now that I’m taking on a new project. Unfortunately I must say at this time I don’t feel very excited about doing that. There are the same types of people and problems associated with it as for Emacs. And dealing with them is really not where my interests lie. I’ll write about that soon also.

In the mean time, let me show you a picture of my clematis integrifolia Durandii, which I planted two years ago.
