Bulletin Board Software: YaBB or E-Blah?

Saturday September 3, 2005

I want to run a bulletin board for discussing MIDI software design and jazz automatic accompaniment generation. But my ISP Shaw Cable’s web hosting service supports only Perl, and no database program! Two bulletin board software systems I can use are YaBB and E-Blah. Both are quite easy to setup: you copy a set of files to the web server, set the correct access rights for them, and set up parameters and options through a few administrative web pages.

YaBB and E-Blah are really quite similar. I ended up choosing YaBB because more forums seem to be run by it (e.g., compare the number of pages returned by Google searches on the terms “YaBB” and “E-Blah” , respectively). I chose YaBB 2 instead of their stable version 1.4 because it has better support for templates, which I need. It’s already RC 3 and YaBB’s own forum is run by it so hopefully it is reasonably stable.

Next thing I did was to create a new template so the board looks like my blog. This consists mostly of editing a CSS file, which luckily I learned how to do a while ago. I have not been able to run YaBB at my ISP. I think I will give up and just run it on my Linux PC instead. So let me introduce to you:

My OS X Programming Forum

So go there, register, and leave a message on the guest book. Discussion boards for MIDI software design and jazz automatic accompaniment generation will be added very soon.

I have put off adding “talk-back” to my blog for reasons I will discuss in a future post. Occasionally when a project is on-going, like the time I was porting Carbon XEmacs, I do wonder whether it would be fun to talk to my readers. Since I’ll be designing stuffs, a more interactive mode may be an interesting thing to try. So, see you all in the forum! Of course announcements of formation of boards will be made here in my blog as well as all the appropriate places too.
